Nurses have defended embattled Nyeri County Secretary Alice Wachira against claims that she is unqualified and unsuitable to hold that position.

Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun) Nyeri Chapter criticised an attack on Ms Wachira by ward reps pushing for the ouster of Governor Nderitu Gachagua.

Nyeri Knun Chapter Secretary-General Beatrice Nduati on Wednesday said Ms Wachira had helped unlock an impasse between the executive and the nurses.

“She engaged the union in negotiations with the executive and led the process of promotion of nurses. She is up to the task,” she said.

Mrs Nduati asked ward reps to allow Ms Wachira to carry out her duties without victimisation or intimidation.

“She should be left to do her work, she is a not a politician. MCAs are wrong in dragging her in their mess,” she said.

The nurses urged the Senate to protect Ms Wachira against intimidation, saying she was competent to hold the position.

Among the grounds used by MCAs to impeach Mr Gachagua was failure to dismiss Mr Wachira.

The assembly recommended her dismissal from office in July on grounds that she had not met the required qualifications, among them 10 years experience in a managerial position.

Governor Gachagua, however, declined to adopt the recommendation saying the MCAs had no power to sack executives he had appointed.
