Nyeri County donates land to judiciary

Nyeri County government has donated a two-acre piece of land to the judiciary for construction of courts in Karatina.

The Chief Registrar of Judiciary Anne Amadi said the proposed new courts will help in improving services delivery to residents.

“In the past, a number of local authorities that preceded county governments did not consider it worthwhile to set apart land for modernisation of the judicial infrastructure,” she said.

Ms Amadi said in some instances, land meant for judiciary was grabbed.

“The commission has being refurbishing courts and establishing high courts in various counties. We are targeting to build courts in marginalized areas,” she said

The judiciary has established high courts in 34 out of the 47 counties.

“We have over 100 ongoing projects across the country.” She said.

Karatina Principal Magistrate Florence Macharia said the Karatina law courts are in a poor state.

Resident Judge Jairus Ngaah said only Nyeri law courts have modern structures in the county.

He said Othaya, Mukukweini, and Karatina law courts are in deplorable condition and need urgent refurbishment.

Ms Amadi said the construction of the courts will start immediately the Judiciary gets the land title deed.

Nyeri Deputy Governor Samuel Wamathai said they will work with the local administration to hasten the process of getting the title deed.
