Lorry driver dies, three people injured in Nyeri accident

A lorry driver died on Wednesday in a road accident that occurred near Wambugu farm along the Nyeri-Karatina road.

Three other people among them a lecture at Kagumo Teachers College and two passengers were injured in the afternoon accident that involved the lorry, a private car, a matatu, and two donkeys that were pulling cart.

The lecture was driving from Nyeri town to the college when he was involved in the accident.

According to a witness, the lorry which was headed to Karatina from Nyeri Town lost control, hitting the two other vehicles and then the two donkeys.

The driver of the matatu, Bernard Maina said he was headed to Nyeri from Karatina when he met the lorry which seemed to have lost control and was overtaking the car.

“The lorry hit my vehicle on the right side breaking my side mirrors and other parts of the vehicle,” he said.

The lorry went on speeding and tried to overtake the private car hitting it from the back and then hitting the donkey cart.

Antony Omondi, a witnesses, said the driver of the private car was trying to avoid hitting the lorry but lost control.

Nyeri traffic police commander Mr Reuben Bett confirmed that the driver of the lorry died while three others sustained injuries and were admitted to the Nyeri County Referral Hospital.
