Ten high school students were on Wednesday evening arrested after they were caught drinking in Nyeri Town.

The nine boys and one girl, all students of Tetu Secondary School in Nyeri County, were found staggering in the town a few minutes to 7pm after a drinking spree.

The students also had in their possession bhang and miraa (khat).

It is suspected that they had purchased the alcohol from one of the popular joints in the town known as Batian Lounge and the other drugs from the neighbouring Majengo slums.

Police were alerted by members of the public and pounced on the students, most of whom were partially in school uniform.

The students attempted to stagger away from the grasp of the police but most were too intoxicated to even walk.

One of them could barely say his name and could not even comprehend where he was. Some had even urinated on themselves.

They were taken to Nyeri Central Police station where upon being searched, police found several bags of miraa.

OFFICIAL CAR

Police officers also found two bags of unrolled bhang and three rolled sticks which the students had tried to hide in the OCPD’s official car which they were carried to the station.

Nyeri Central OCPD, Masai Makau condemned the behaviour of the school children saying they would be charged in court Thursday.

“This is very irresponsible behaviour from the students and especially bar owners and miraa vendors who sell drugs to minors,” said the police boss.

The staff and owner of the entertainment joint were however not arrested as police said that they found the students on the streets and they had refused to reveal where they purchased the alcohol.

“We suspect the one who sold them the alcohol kicked them out of the club after realising police had been alerted. The students have also refused to identify the sellers,” said Mr Makau.

The police boss however maintained that investigations were ongoing to identify the sellers.
