Police have shot and killed two most wanted criminals along the Nyeri-Nairobi highway as they engaged in a robbery spree.

Two other people, including a police officer, were wounded in the Wednesday 11am gun drama.

The two criminals and a third suspect, who managed to escape, were caught red handed by police as they robbed a motorcycle rider in Mahiga-ini.

They had laid an ambush on unsuspecting motorists at a corner where bumps have been erected to prevent accidents.

The motorcycle rider was headed to Nyeri Town when he was accosted by the criminals.

He was shot in the stomach and the gun wielding robbers were searching him when police on patrol caught up with them.

When confronted, one of the robbers who had a rifle opened fire on the officers wounding one in the leg.

A gun fight ensued and police managed to gun down two of the suspects while the third escaped in a Toyota Probox car that they had been using.

MOST WANTED LIST

An AK- 47 rifle and 12 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the two who have been on the police most wanted list for a series of violent robberies in the central region.

Nyeri District Criminal investigations Officer (DCIO), Rashid Abdi said that the two were part of a three-man gang that had been terrorising residents of Karatina Town, Nyeri Town and parts of Kirinyaga County.

“These criminals have given us a hard time for months but their day has finally come,” Mr Rashid said.

The gang is said to have been responsible for a trail of armed robberies targeting M-Pesa shops and motorists.

Mathira West police boss David Kemboi who visited the scene assured the residents that the police were determined to eliminate criminal gangs.

“We are very much up to the task and committed to rooting out these criminals living among us,” said the police boss.
