Karatina police want Ramsey the dog back

What you need to know:

  • Mathira East Divisional Police Commander Mathews Gwiyo told the Nation that they got the dog in September last year.
  • The dogs are also allocated handlers, who take care of them and take them out for field operations.

One moment Ramsey was on patrol in Karatina along with his co-workers, and then, poof, he was gone.

The male German shepherd disappeared from his kennel at the police station in Nyeri County on Tuesday after night patrol.

What baffles his handlers and observers in town is how a trained dog would escape from a secured kennel, located inside a police station that is also the divisional headquarters.

Mathira East Divisional Police Commander Mathews Gwiyo told the Nation that they got the dog in September last year.

“It is very shocking how the dog disappeared. The dog’s handler said he secured him well in the kennel but when he went to check on him in the morning, he was gone,” said Mr Gwiyo.

Police dogs are trained in patrol and tracking skills, and narcotics and explosives detection under the dog unit.

Among the qualities of a police dog are viciousness, sharp tracking skills and discipline, and hence the canines are treated as police officers.

DID HE RETURN FROM PATROL?

The dogs are also allocated handlers, who take care of them and take them out for field operations.

Detectives handling the disappearance are also investigating the possibility that the dog was never returned to the station after the night patrol.

The police boss also could not confirm whether the officers who had taken the dog on patrol actually put him back in his kennel.

“We don’t know if he came back or not so we are actually investigating all possibilities,” said the police boss.

Police have for the past two days been combing the county in search of the canine and are now appealing to the public for information on the dog.
