Students plead guilty to being drunk, fined Sh500 each

Ten secondary school student’s arrested in Nyeri Town on Wednesday evening drunk and staggering were charged before a Nyeri court.

The students were accused of being drunk and disorderly on September 7 at around 6pm, they were found.

The prosecution told the court that the students were also shouting and staggering due to drunkenness.

The students, among them nine boys and one girl from Tetu Secondary School in Nyeri, pleaded guilty of the charge.

The court heard that students are suspected to have purchased the alcohol from a popular bar in Nyeri Town.

The court also heard that police were alerted by the public who spotted the students shouting and staggering suspecting that they were under the influence of alcohol.

Police said that after searching, they found bhang and miraa on them. They then arrested the students and took them to Nyeri Central Police station.

The students were presented before the Nyeri Chief Magistrate John Onyiego.

Mr Onyiego ordered them to pay a fine of Sh500 each. They were also given 14 days to appeal.
