Two police officers died on the spot and 15 suspects were injured in an accident in Mururi, on the Nyeri-Nanyuki highway.

An escort police officer was also injured in the morning accident involving a Narumoru Police Station's Land Cruiser vehicle.

The Narumoru police officers were transporting the suspects to a Nanyuki court to face charges related to the ongoing crackdown on illicit brew in central Kenya.

According to Kieni East OCPD Ancient Kaloki, the cause of the accident was not known, adding that the driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle, forcing it to veer off the road.

“We cannot ascertain the cause of the accident immediately. Answers as to what led the driver (to) lose control of the car will be available after investigations,” he said.

The suspects and an officer who was said to have sustained serious injuries were rushed to Nanyuki Referral Hospital.

Some suspects who sustained minor injuries tried to escape but were caught by the residents and handed over to the police.

According to an eyewitness, Anthony Ndegwa, the circumstances surrounding the accident were a mystery, insisting that the vehicle was neither speeding nor overtaking as was being alleged.

“It is very hard to explain how the accident happened. The vehicle was moving uphill when it started moving side to side before it finally landed on the opposite side of the lane,” he said.
