Nyeri Governor Samuel Wamathai has declared his interest to defend the seat in the August general election, a week after the death of his predecessor Nderitu Gachagua under whom he served as deputy.

Mr Wamathai said he will vie for the seat on a Jubilee Party ticket as he vowed to implement development programmes started by the former governor.

Speaking to journalists Thursday in Nyeri Town after the swearing-in of six county executive committee members, Mr Wamathai said he is yet to identify his running mate.

“I am not fearing other candidates. Men’s character is to meet in the field and face each other. Nobody is carrying a child (on his back) and I am capable of winning the seat,” said Mr Wamathai.

He said he will present his nomination papers to the Jubilee Party headquarters in Nairobi.

Mr Wamathai has already received support from Mr Gachagua’s family, who said they will also accord him their “political machinery”.

He will battle for the Jubilee Party ticket with Senator Mutahi Kagwe, businessman Thuo Mathenge, Mr Githinji Kinyanjui, hotelier Patrick Munene, former Vision 2030 director Wahome Gakuru and Athi Water Services Board chairman Wachira Keen.
