People going to the infamous Suk Mukdi (black market) were rounded by armed police officers before being asked to identify themselves.

Police first surrounded the busy market raising speculation that there could be criminals hiding among traders and their customers.

Those who failed to properly identify themselves were led to waiting police lorry and taken to the Garissa Police Station.

Following the midday operation, the town was thrown into total confusion as some businesses were hurriedly closed as the owners feared they would be arrested while others continued working as usual.

When the Nation visited the police station, lorries full of people found without identity cards could be seen driving to the recently launched child protection unit which is inside the station.

There was heavy presence of police around the market which is situated at the center of the town along Kismayu road. The operation continued until evening.

"We know there are aliens and the operation is to make sure people living in Garissa illegally are taken out," he said.

Those who will be found to be in the country illegally will be arraigned in court Tuesday, he said, adding that he will confirm the number of people arrested in the operation.
