Seven killed in Luanda as matatu bursts into flames

Seven people have been killed after an accident involving a 14-seater matatu in Luanda along the Kisumu-Busia highway.

Another eight who survived with serious injuries after the matatu burst into flames are undergoing treatment at Vihiga District Hospital in Mbale.

The family was travelling back home from Kitale when a quarrel ensued between them and the driver, Mr Stephen Kahira.

He is said to have then jumped off the speeding vehicle, which veered off the road and overturned.

REDUCED TO ASHES

According to Emuhaya police boss Mr Benson Kilonzo, the accident occurred around 12.30 am.

"The seven bodies were burnt beyond recognition and the matatu reduced to ashes," he said.

Vihiga district hospital medical superintendent Dr Francis Odira said the hospital received seven female casualties and 1 male.

“One of them sustained serious burns and she is in critical condition,” he told the Nation.
