Police investigating Wundyanyi chief for possible fraud

A local administrator is among 25 people being investigated for defrauding a herder and a businessman of more than Sh1.8 million.

Investigators say a chief from Wundanyi, whose name was not given due to sensitivity of the matter, allegedly presided over the signing of an illegitimate lease that saw a Somali herder and a businessman lose millions of shillings to a 25-member self-help group.

Wundanyi police boss Benjamin Muhia said investigations were still under way.

The OCPD said that members of the self-help group defrauded the victims by pretending they could lease them 48,000 acres of land to graze their livestock.

In their claim documents, the victims said the group pretended to be owners of the 60,000-acre Kishushe Ranching Cooperative Society Limited and went ahead to negotiate pricing of a section of the ranch that they were to be allocated for grazing purposes.

According to the agreement, the herders were to pay the group a monthly fee of Sh50,000.
