Ten worshipers were injured on Sunday evening after their church in Tharaka-Nithi collapsed following a strong wind.

The faithful from Galilee Pentecostal Church in Ngonya Village in Tharaka South Sub-County were rushed to Kibung’a Sub-County Hospital.

Among the injured were five children and five adults, with most of them sustaining cuts on the head from the iron sheets.

According to an eye-witness Mr Martin Mutegi, a strong wind blew off the roof before the wall made of earthen bricks caved in on the congregation as they were going on with their Sunday worship.

“I saw a whirlwind blow off the roof and upon descending, it covered the entire congregation,” said Mr Mutegi.

He said screams attracted neighbours who came in big numbers and helped to rescue the injured. They were rushed to the hospital on motorbikes.

Another eye-witness, John Kimathi, said the worshipers were rescued by people who were taking a local brew at a home located few meters from the church.

A worshiper, Ms Mary Muthoni, said they had closed eyes for prayers when the incident happened.

“We did not see the whirlwind come because we had closed our eyes for prayers,” said Ms Muthoni.
