Roads connecting Tharaka-Nithi to Meru impassable after heavy rains

Business people in Tharaka-Nithi are counting loss after heavy rains rendered the two major roads that link the county to Meru impassable.

The Mukothima-Meru and Marimanti-Mitunguu roads have been completely cut off by floods forcing the travellers to use the Chiakariga-Chuka road which is more than 100 kilometres longer.

On Sunday, Mr Edgar Njagi, a motorist, told the Nation that his vehicle had been stuck in the mud for three days.

“We cannot leave the vehicle here because it can be vandalised so we have to spend nights here until the rains subside,” said Mr Njagi.

Ms Muthoni Mwithi, a businesswoman, said she had lost Sh20,000 after the green grams she was transporting to Meru Town were rained on

“This is my fourth day here and the rain water penetrated the truck and the green grams have started sprouting,” said Ms Mwithi.

“We trade with our neighbours in Meru County where we sell our farm produce and buy the manufactured goods from the wholesalers but no vehicle can access Meru Town [now],” she added.
