A man was found dead on Sunday morning after he was beaten up on Saturday evening by an angry mob in Cheptulu, Hamisi Sub-County, Vihiga County.

Hamisi Deputy County Commissioner Dennis Kirui on Sunday said that the mob beat up the 60-year-old man after he severely beat up his 25-year-old daughter and injured her using a kitchen knife.

BEATEN UP

A house belonging to a police officer, which was set ablaze on Saturday night, was related to the 60-year-old man’s death, locals said. But Mr Kirui denied claim.

“The man who was killed had beaten up his daughter using a knife and injured her. Some members of the public decided to beat him up for injuring his daughter,” said Mr Kirui.

“He [the deceased] may have sustained some internal injuries because he went back to his home and slept only to be found dead this morning (Sunday). We have arrested three people who are helping us with investigations.”

The suspects are being held at Serem Police Station.

NOT RELATED

The official quickly delinked the murder incident to the torching of a police constable’s rented house, even as locals insisted that the two incidences are connected.

“The deceased was seen as a nuisance in the society. People in the area say his conduct was not good. The matter could be purely a family dispute,” said Mr Kirui.

“Yes, a house belonging to a police officer burnt to ashes but the two incidences are not related,” Mr Kirui added.

Hamisi OCPD Lucy Kanani said a burning candle could have started the fire. The house was not connected to electricity.
