West Pokot residents protest over mismanagement of bursary funds

Dozens of residents from Sook, West Pokot County held a protest over corruption and mismanagement of the county’s bursary fund.

The demonstrators marched to the county headquarters in Kapenguria to present their grievances to the county officials.

Carrying placards, twigs and singing songs the protesters claimed some students who were supposed to receive financial aid are yet to get the funds.

Led by Amos Kurio, a university student, the demonstrators accused Sook ward administrator of disbursing bursary meant for residents of the ward to students from other wards.

“We want to know why students from other areas are benefiting from funds meant for Sook students,” said Mr Kurio.

They called on Governor Simon Kachapin to intervene in the matter.

Speaking to Nation.co.ke, West Pokot County Acting County Secretary Jackson Peng’at said the county government was investigating the allegations.  

“We want to establish the truth and whoever will be found guilty will carry his own cross,” said Mr Peng’at.

Mr Penga’t noted that the issue has taken a political angle.

“We don’t want politicians to politicise the issue,” he said.
