KAMPALA

Kizza Besigye, the man who lost to Yoweri Museveni in the February presidential election and who is detained at Luzira Prison on treason charges, has applied for bail.

In his application, the opposition leader cited about 10 reasons on why he needed to be released.

The FDC boss said he was above 60 years old and that he was not sure when his trial would begin. He also said he had sureties and would not interfere with investigations.

“It is in the interest of justice that I be admitted to bail as I am assumed to be innocent. Commencement of my trial cannot be ascertained, particularly in view of the commitment of judicial resources to the disposal of election petitions around the country and therefore I should not be made to remain in prison,” Besigye said.

The veteran opposition leader said he was a law-abiding citizen and would be in court to face trial when called. The head of the criminal division of the High Court, Justice Wilson Masalu Musene, received the file. The hearing of the bail application will be on July 6.
