Parliament to probe KBC salaries strike

National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende on Thursday directed two parliamentary committees to investigate issues raised by the striking KBC staff.

Mr Marende gave committees on Energy and Communication three weeks to table their findings in the House.

This came as the strike entered its second day on Thursday. (READ: KBC staff to go on strike over low pay)

The workers are demanding salary arrears and allowances amounting to Sh360 million.

The salaries and allowances increment effected recently benefited only a few managers, the staff said in a press statement read by news anchor Njambi Koikai.

“We would also like the KBC Act to be amended to allow our salaries to paid by the Exchequer and not to be pegged on the revenue generated,” the workers said.

They asked the management to promptly address the plight of artistes who earn a monthly salary of Sh16,000 before tax.

KBC managing director Waithaka Waihenya called for patience saying the Information permanent secretary, Dr Bitange Ndemo, had written to the Treasury requesting for more funds.

“I would also like to confirm that the workers were recently awarded a nine per cent salary increase and they will be paid another 12 per cent which will be backdated to July,” he said in an interview.
