Makueni Senate by-election set for July 22- IEBC

Makueni County voters will go to the polls on July 22 to elect a new Senator.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said the political parties wishing to field candidates should have conducted party primaries by June 3.

IEBC communications manager Tabitha Mutemi said the commission will hold a briefing of political parties on May 28.

She said the IEBC had complied with the law, which requires a by election be held within 90 days after a seat is declared vacant.

"In accordance with article 101(4) (a) of the Constitution of Kenya, the Independent  Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) received a notice from the Senate Speaker Hon Ekwe Ethuro on Monday, May 13, 2013, declaring the Makueni Senate seat vacant. This followed the death of Senator Mutula Kilonzo on 27th April, 2013," she said in a statement.

"The County Returning Officer (CRO) will be gazetted and issued with a notice to conduct this by-election by the IEBC Chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan on Monday, May 27, 2013."

Makueni County has six constituencies: Mbooni, Makueni, Kilome, Kaiti, Kibwezi East and Kibwezi West.

Mr Kilonzo, who was found dead in his Maanzoni ranch, was buried on May 9.
