Senators want our positions, says Oparanya

Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya has accused senators of attempting to wrestle power from the county bosses.

Mr Oparanya who is also the ODM deputy chairman said most senators are eyeing governorship in 2017 General Election, “which is why they are continually fighting governors’.

“Supremacy wars between governors and senators have contributed to chaos witnessed in some counties including Makueni which is currently facing dissolution,” Mr Oparanya said.

“We are disappointed with constant accusation by senators that we are not working. That is why it is not a surprise to me that they don’t attend county functions,” added Mr Oparanya who spoke in Kisumu on Saturday.

“The senators are only fighting us so they can control county funds and other resources. Even in my own county, I have been experiencing constant bashing from the senator who never attends county functions at all.”

Differences between governors and senators erupted last August when the latter demanded that county bosses must appear before them to audit questions.

The governors accused senators of exercising power they did not have.
