Outpour of donations for girl with kidney failure

Well-wishers have raised about Sh300,000 for Caroline Wangechi, a 21-year-old girl with kidney failure, a day after we highlighted her plight.

Ms Wangechi had shared her one-week diary on Wednesday, giving her account of her struggles with kidney failure. She spoke of her optimism to raise Sh2.5 million needed for her kidney transplant in India.

Caroline’s condition, end-stage renal disease, began in March 2013 and she has now been on dialysis for more than 18 months.

Dialysis helps to filter blood in order to remove waste, salt and extra water to prevent them from building up in the body.

In May this year, her uncle was found to be a match and would be donating one of his kidneys to her.

The family had initially raised about Sh700,000 but has since spent the amount on dialysis.

Ms Wangechi, who hopes to be a nurse, requires dialysis twice a week.

On Thursday, fresh from her four hours dialysis, she said she was grateful for the money trickling in.

“I want to thank all those who sent the money to my mother. I also want to thank all those who are praying for me,” she said on phone.

Her mother Lydia Nyambura was overwhelmed by the encouraging calls and texts as well as donations sent from well-wishers.

Caroline’s father, David Ndigaru Karitu, was beyond himself with joy. He said: “I may not know the people who are assisting my daughter but I am humbled that we all want Caroline better.”

To assist her, you can call or send your contribution to her father’s number on 0724-769830 or 0727-352134.

In addition, financial assistance can be sent to Equity Bank, Chaka branch, account number 0110190288179.
