Queen Elizabeth II is not known for her grasp of social media, but she tapped into a trend when she inadvertently photobombed an Australian athlete's selfie at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

Hockey player Jayde Taylor was posing for a photograph with a teammate when the 88-year-old British monarch moved into view in the background and appeared to be smiling over her shoulder.

"Ahhh The Queen photo-bombed our selfie!! #royalty #sheevensmiled #amazing," Taylor wrote when she posted the picture on Twitter later in the day.

Within hours the photo had swept the Internet, being retweeted at least 5,000 times.

Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip were touring venues at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

The Queen formally opened the games at a lively Scottish-themed ceremony on Wednesday night.
