Deputy President William Ruto on Sunday caused a stir when he made an impromptu stopover at Maili Tisa junction in Uasin Gishu County and took lunch at a kiosk.

The DP was from a fundsdrive at Jua Kali for churches. He was with Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago and Woman Rep Eusla Ng’eny, and MPs Elisha Busienei (Turbo) and Dan Wanyama (Webuye West).

His security detail had a hectic time controlling the anxious crowd milling around the mud-walled kiosk where the leaders ate ugali and chicken. A relaxed Mr Ruto, who mingled with the public, said he made the stopover to remember where he started his “hustling” when he sold chicken many years ago.

Lazima kila mtu afanye kazi. Nilikuwa nikiuza kuku hapa lakini bidii yangu imeniwezesha kujenga hoteli Nairobi ambayo nauza kuku (Everybody should work. I used to sell chicken here but my hard work has enabled me to build a hotel in Nairobi, where I sell chicken),” said the DP, who took a Sh300 meal at Ms Josphine Sitienei’s eatery, paid Sh10,000 for all the customers at the adjacent kiosks and gave Sh150,000 to all the traders at the shopping centre.

Christopher Mibey, a retired soldier, caused laughter when he offered to pay Mr Ruto’s meal.

“We thank all of you for praying for the President, Mr Sang and myself when the ICC case was hanging over our heads,” said Mr Ruto.

EXPANDING TECHNICAL COLLEGES

He announced that the government has set aside Sh15 billion for the expansion of the existing 80 technical colleges and the setting up of 60 others countrywide from next year.

“We want our youth to gain technical skills which can make them job creators to move the country forward,” he said.

In Uasin Gishu County, said Mr Ruto, technical institutions will be set up in Moiben, Kipkabus, Ngeria and Turbo with Sh100 million already released for Cheptabach Youth Polytechnic. He said plans were at an advanced stage for students in day schools to study free of charge in the next two years.

The DP said the government was setting up a multimillion-shilling hospital in Eldoret Town, the county capital, adding that the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTHR) will soon be under the management of the county government.

He said Sh450 million and Sh350 million, respectively, had been set aside for the expansion and equipping of Ziwa and Burnt Forest hospitals.

Mr Ruto also said the government has set aside another Sh450 million for the expansion of New KCC to exploit a Sh90 million milk market in Congo.

Mr Mandago called on the government to fast-track the supply of more than 60,000 bags of CAN fertiliser for maize farmers in North Rift region.
