Kenyans' love for football saw the 2014 World Cup emerge top in the year’s general trending searches.

Manchester United was heavily represented as two of their players, Angel Di Maria and Juan Mata, were the sixth and tenth most searched for people on Google in Kenya.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), which replaced the Joint Admissions Board, emerged second in the top 10 searches and trending searches categories.

Kenyans did not escape the meme craze that swirled the Internet and took to social media to vent their anger at the government over insecurity.

Former Interior and National Coordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku occupied the fifth most popular meme behind Harry Potter, tWorld Cup, Gym and Kermit.

Other top Kenyan searches included Ebola symptoms, Kermit memes, transcoding, how to survive, OLX, wazua.co.ke and Maseno University.

Other leading search items were prominent people who died, including former Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang’, Dr Myles Munroe and American comedian Robin Williams, who committed suicide.
