What you need to know:

  • That must have also been a good night for Jacky B, the producer of the track. He has upped his game from the days of Mateke, when his tracks lacked the bite, that crisp, edgy sound texture that is achieved by tweaking treble equalisers during the mastering process.

  • In Vanity, Jacky B also shines because of his genius instrumentation, full of intuitive guitar licks and riffs, all hosted by a laid-back, groovy seben fusion beat.

Music review: RATING 8/10

Artiste: Daddy Owen

Song: Vanity

If you attended this year’s Groove Awards ceremony at the Safaricom Stadium, you would bear witness to the electrifying performance Daddy Owen gave when he performed Vanity.

Half the crowd wildly sang along, while the other half stood transfixed, in awe of the brother who has made gospel music so hip and trendy.

That must have also been a good night for Jacky B, the producer of the track. He has upped his game from the days of Mateke, when his tracks lacked the bite, that crisp, edgy sound texture that is achieved by tweaking treble equalizers during the mastering process.

In Vanity, Jacky B also shines because of his genius instrumentation, full of intuitive guitar licks and riffs, all hosted by a laid-back, groovy seben fusion beat.

The way I see it, if you’re in the industry and your surname begins with the letter B, then you’re probably on your way to becoming a hotshot music producer like Teddy B, Bizi B or Jacky B.

Daddy Owen hasn’t even done a proper video yet, but the lyrics video he created for Vanity, released a month ago, has already garnered 27,000 views on YouTube, a sure sign of the impending hype the official video is bound to create. Knowing him, he is probably working with the best video directors as we speak.

The message of the song is clear; that all the efforts people make to acquire wealth and the trappings of life are all in vain if Christ is not at the centre of your life.

It borrows heavily from the writer of Ecclesiastes, who paints a rather grim picture of the meaningless of worldly wealth.
