DRAMA FESTIVAL: Outstanding performances mark end of competition stage

Mugoiri Girls High School’s hilarious play, The Trial of Anstoto, was the highlight on day seven of the 57th Kenya National Drama Festival at Meru School in Meru County.

A satire on drama and the festivals, where the drama teacher is put in the dock for staging a play that led to destruction of school property, the play is brought to court and the jury interrogates it.It was scripted by Mr Munene wa Mumbi.

Nembu Girls High’s cultural dance Tina, was well received by the audience with the main soloist, Karen Lusamukha, carrying the day.

The dance is about inmates who are rejected by the society despite having values that might help to change it.

Other powerful presentations included Riara Springs Girls High’s French play, Barani Secondary’s stand-up comedy, Kabaa High’s comedy, Kapkenda Girls’ modern dance, a Kiswahili play by St Mary’s Yala

and Butere Girls’ cultural dance.

OUTSTANDING SOLO

Also outstanding were Buruburu Girls’ French solo, St Peter’s Mumias Boys’ stand-up comedy, St Anne’s Gutuba Girls’ cultural dance, Kegonge Boys’ modern dance, a dance by Thika High School for the

Blind, Sigalame High’s modern dance and a cultural dance by Kyeni Girls High.

At the Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), Wakunga, by choral verse defending champions Kibabii Teachers Training College, was well received.

The verse on corruption was produced by Mrs Jessica Simiyu and Mr Saul Barasa and directed by Mr Martin Makharu and Mr Winsten Matepe.

Kericho TTC presented Khamwenyi, a cultural dance about the plight of the blind child.

Mount Kenya University Eldoret Campus’ Armstrong Mutali Matani and Brian Juma presented Plot 10, a ‘know your neighbour’ oral narrative.

In all, 15 items were performed Monday, marking the end of the competition stage.

The gala concert will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at Meru School and the neighbouring Kaaga Girls High School in Meru Town.
