Avril: Picture perfect with no apologies

BUZZ: How has your year been?

AVRIL: My year has been very eventful. I have made many leaps in my career.

Tell us more...

Well, I managed to get nominated for an international award and also managed a win in the Nzumari Awards. I’ve been on trips all around Kenya and beyond. Going to South Africa was actually a dream come true for me.

I have also performed at many high profile events for dignitaries such as the Prime Minister of Kenya plus I’ve met a lot of people who have inspired me.

So you’ve had a really successful 2010. What would you attribute that to?

Team work and family support, without which I could not have made it.

You have been tipped to be the next Amani or Wahu, how do you feel about that?

I’m humbled and honoured to be placed at the same rank as the most accomplished contemporary music female artistes in this country because these are the very women who inspired me to join the industry in the first place.

Amani is my big sister in the Ogopa family so I’m more than privileged that I have her to hold my hand and guide me. I hope that I’ll be able to influence the industry in the same way she has.

What has been your highest achievement this year?

Being part of the “Jisomee, Jiamulie, Jichagulie” new Constitution civic education campaign commissioned by the Committee of Experts under Kenyans 4 Change.

I refuse to be dragged into that conversation. It is what it is. However malicious the act was, I have moved past it and put it behind me. We have discussed the matter with my manager and decided it’s best not to discuss it any further.

Has it affected your career or personal life?

Wouldn’t it be better if you just told us the truth about what happened?

I did nothing wrong. I believe that at times it is better to let people be. There is no explanation beyond what I have told you.

But some people say it was planned?

I will stick to my guns and make no comment.

So your career is intact then?

I have had a good year and I will not be dragged down!

What are your plans for next year?

Many things. I have been working on a pet project that will see me venture into design and of course I plan to release an album and a single that will change the industry.
