What you need to know:

  • Two designs that caught my eye were Katungulu’s sleeve garter and Kooroo’s lapel pin for their striking simplicity, craftsmanship and sophistication.

  • Beautiful as they were, it remains unclear if the pieces will go into mass production and be available for the public to purchase.

Couture Africa and SKYY vodka joined forces to launch a design challenge for East African artistes. Designers Adele Dejak, Babalika, Katungulu Mwendwa, Kooroo and Loyangalani were asked to create a limited edition menswear accessory from recycled blue SKYY Vodka glasess.

The preview cocktail featured a catwalk with each designer’s expression of their individual perspective and style.

The pieces, which included two necklaces, an arm band, a brooch and a pair of cufflinks were beautiful, well-crafted and designed but sadly too few to really capture the crowd’s attention.

The designers created the one-of-a-kind accessories from a variety of materials including brass, bone and leather.

TRULY DAPPER AFFAIR

While Styyled by Nairobi focused on a truly dapper affair for “Today’s modern gentlemen”, most men and women failed to dazzle in the wardrobe department proving once again that outside of a small cluster of consistently exceptionally dressed fashion lovers, Nairobi has miles of progress to cover when it comes to theme dressing.

In a sprinkle of well put together accessorized looks drowning in a sea of underwhelming and unimaginative dark suits, DJ Zelalem was the night’s best dressed in a waistcoat and slim fit pants combo coupled with multiple accessories.

Ladies made a bit more of an effort. Looking notably trendy in blue skater skirts, both Sarah Hassan and DJ Pierra paired them with white vests.

Applause for Michelle Muthoni who stood out as the evening’s best dressed in a cobalt blue high slit gown.

Have a great week beautiful people.
