You describe yourself as a “balance between style and comfort”, what does that mean?

Exactly my words. A lot of times it is very easy to go for what is comfortable. For example, think about my shoes. I’m wearing six inch red high heels, I could easily have gone for my flip flops because they are more comfortable to walk in but I also want to look stylish. At the end of the day you still want to look stylish and be comfortable. That is what I mean.

What is fashion to you?

Communication. I think fashion is a way of saying who you are without uttering a word. Today I walked in here and anyone who met me without knowing my name will already have a perception of who I am just by how I’m dressed.

What made you choose fashion?

Fashion is like something your parents told you not to do, then you decided to try and you got hooked forever. Honestly when I went into fashion I didn’t know I would stay in it forever. I used to be a model once upon a time and I thought that it would be a phase, but years later here I am, still in fashion.

You are no longer a model, why?

It was time. Growth and change are both good things. Let’s just say that chapter closed.

What do you do apart from blogging?

I am a Marketing and PR consultant with African Elite Group Ltd. I handle the luxury brands such as Moët & Chandon. It’s a lot of work but very interesting.

Did you always want to be a marketer?

I never imagined myself as a marketer. I wanted to do Chemical Engineering, I did three sciences in school. How I ended up in marketing is a long story for another time but I love where I am right now. I wouldn’t imagine doing anything else. Right now I’m doing my Masters of Business Administration (MBA) at the United States International University.

You have won awards for blogging, what challenges come with being at the top?

It feels great to win awards, especially when I won at the Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE). The award makes you feel like, ‘OMG, I have done something.’ It’s nice, it makes you feel motivated. It makes you feel like you have earned a position in that industry. However, with it comes the constant challenge to do more and be better.

What are some of the questions you get asked by fans and strangers?

People have asked me how I lost my weight after having a baby and how I keep fit. ‘How did you get your blog to be so big, how do you have such a big following?’ I get all kinds of questions. One which I still remember was when a male stranger on the streets shouted my name and asked if I lived in Kenya. I asked why and he said that my photos do not look like they were taken in Kenya.

You are a mother, a wife, how has that changed your life?

Motherhood is one of the best things that have ever happened to me. It reminds you of who you are and what you stand for. It keeps me grounded. Being a mother teaches you a lot, you become more selfless. Every time I think or make decisions, I do it for three people. I stop and think about my son and my husband. So it gives you that whole mentality… you are able to connect and understand people better.

Any plans to expand your family?

For now no, I think we are fine...

How good are you in the kitchen?

I try. However cooking is not my favourite thing to do, but that doesn’t mean I can’t cook. I know you are looking at my nails, (Red long nails) yes they are mine and they are real but I can handle everything well. I love to bake, once in a while I will get in the kitchen and bake some nice cookies for my little boy. I also like oven dishes. Luckily one thing that I thank God for is my husband who makes some of the most delicious foods, God bless his heart. I thank God that my husband loves being in the kitchen. For me, the kitchen is no longer an obligation and I’m very happy.

How was your childhood?

I have always said, my life has been a journey. I was born in Machakos, I grew up in Mombasa and now I call Nairobi home. My life continues to be a journey. My family has always lived in Mombasa but earlier in my life I lived with my grandparents in Machakos and so every school holiday I went to see my parents. I’m sad that Akamba Bus Service went out of business because its nostalgic thinking of all the bus rides I took.

One thing you miss about being a teenager?

Being a geek. Back then I would be that girl that you would take out on a date and we would discuss the distance of light. In school I was the head of the Mathematics club and I also participated in science congress. I have memories of going to Chavakali to represent my school in the National Science Congress.

How would your friends describe you?

Oh, that’s interesting, how would they? Perhaps I should ask them and see what they say. I’m not sure, but I think I am a very vibrant person. I like to laugh. I hope they think I’m stylish. (Laughs). I try to make humility my virtue. But if I were to describe myself I would say prayerful and a lover of the fine things in life.
