Walt Disney has warned that the film could be one of the year’s biggest flops, predicting losses of almost $200m (Sh17 billion).

The movie, which had been billed as one of the year’s biggest, tanked in the box office and critics panned it mercilessly. Budgeted at $225m, all signs showed a successful outing. It is directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

When the film opened in the US and Canada over the July 4 Independence Day weekend it banked a measly $29.9m. By comparison, Man of Steel cashed in $125m over the same period. It has so far grossed just $86.7 million in the US.

Now Depp and Bruckheimer are blaming the film’s bad showing on critics.

“I think the reviews were written seven to eight months before we released the film. The critics had expectations that it must be a blockbuster. I don’t have any expectations of that. I never do.”

Bruckheimer said were wrong. “It’s one of those movies that whatever the critics missed in it this time, they’ll review it in a few years and see that they made a mistake.”
