The performance of the Collective Management Organisations (CMOs) — the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), Kenya Association of Music Producers and Performers Rights Society of Kenya — has been termed as “average”.

This was the verdict given by its governing body, Kenya Copyright Board (Kecobo), during a parliamentary committee meeting.

Kecobo acting executive director Edward Sigei said: “Renewal of the three CMOs has been approved but the performance is average. However, if we said the organisations do not qualify in their capacity to serve the artistes, then who will collect the money?”

Meanwhile, musician Rufftone has questioned why MCSK needs another week to reconcile their documents yet they have records in place, albeit with conflicting reports.

“Why should they be given more time... to fabricate the documents? Artistes do not know much about the laws and that’s why the CMOs are there. Artistes have to get their dues, anyone appointed and or nominated and does not have the best interests of the

artistes at heart should be replaced. For a long time artistes have been ignorant but poverty has educated them. We are not naïve any more,” he said.
