The most fashionable TV shows

Beyond the “wine and popcorn” moments Olivia Pope brings to the screen, Scandal has had deeper impact. And not Scandal alone, most TV shows have a seismic influence on fashion. What you need to know:

  • Travelling to New York? You had best friends Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda to offer advice on what the women who brunch (and cocktail) were wearing.

  • We say: “Thank you for being a friend” to all the women (and gents) who permanently changed the face of TV and fashion.

  • Gossip Girl: From Blair’s strict adherence to the uptown codes of tailored modesty to Serena’s bohemian chic, their clothes always had the town talking.

Style inspiration comes from all over, but there’s no arguing that we get most of our ideas from our favourite TV shows and characters. With millions of people settling down at the end of their long days to watch their favourite shows, TV has become one of the most influential visual mediums in fashion.

You don’t have to be a reality show fan to shape the way we’re dressing in real life. More than what the weather will be when we leave the house tomorrow morning, TV shows us how we’ll want to dress when we do so.

Gossip Girl: From Blair’s strict adherence to the uptown codes of tailored modesty to Serena’s bohemian chic, their clothes always had the town talking.

This upper-east side drama had women emulating both leading women’s style. The shows’ fashion was so epic it scored cameos from some of fashions biggest stars like Tim Gunn, Vera Wang, Lady Gaga, Tyra Banks, Diane Von Furstenberg and Rachel Zoe... and it had a list of designers willingly to loan pieces to the shows costume designer.

Scandal: We’ll never again look at white coats the same way now that Olivia Pope’s given new meaning to style.

With a cast sporting Armani suits, Escada blazers and Prada handbags, Scandal offers insight into the sharp clean-cut styles of the political elite. The success of Olivia Pope’s wardrobe, which includes structured but feminine suits in soft colours like white, cream, caramel and light-brown, paired with the occasional charcoal grey and snow white gowns with black lace or sequin detail, resulted in the star partnering with the show’s costume designer, Lyn Paolo, and creating a killer line for The Limited.

Washington described the line as a staple for women who were not afraid to have it all with pieces that are glamorous, smart, powerful, and sexy.

Mad Men: It’s one of highest rated shows on television today. Between the pillbox hats, empire waist, A-line skirts and bar jackets that show the right amount of curve, these timeless wardrobe staples put this show on the fashion map. The shows costume design was so popular that it influenced trends on the runway as well as two collections at Banana Republic, and had men asking for the don draper cut.

Sex And The City:  No list would be complete without the number 1 fashionable TV show in television history. It was the show that captured the lives and styles of four New York women: The Upper East Side primness of Charlotte, Miranda’s power-suit prowess, Samantha’s sexy hip-hugging dresses and, of course, the first columnist to wear a tutu on the streets of Manhattan, Carrie.

Versace gowns, Manolo Blahnik heels, vintage fur coats, name plate necklace and oversize flower pins — Carrie’s killer closet quickly made her a fashion icon. Beyond the fabulous footwear addiction that caused Carrie to max-out several credit cards and even got her held up at gunpoint, Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha taught us to express ourselves through fashion!

Have a great, week beautiful!
