With the rains on the way and the eminent change in weather, children as well as adults are coming down with the cold or what we sometimes call the flu.

During the rainy season, there seems to be more people coming down with colds and coughs or flu symptoms ranging from fever, sore throat, muscle aches, nasal congestion, and chills.

And because of the misery the rainy weather “seems to bring” we may assume the people are getting sick because of the cold temperature.

However, it is not the temperature that causes the flu or the common cold. But rather viruses, bacteria and other germs. During the cold or rainy season most people stay indoors or in confined spaces. Whether it is in a vehicle or house or classroom, most windows will be closed to avoid being wet.

The reason more people get sick more often during the rainy season is because they are exposed to each other more than during the hot weather.

When it is cold or raining outside most people tend to stay indoors. Viruses tend to spread more easily through dry air. When it is cold outside, the air is drier both outdoors and indoors.
