Many people will spend a substantial amount of time outdoors during the holidays.

Sometimes, although adequate care may be taken to protect skin from the harsh sun rays, the after effects may still manifest themselves.

Burnt skin appears red and is usually painful and dry. To recover quickly, drink as much water as possible. The ultra-violet rays continue to harm the skin even when you are out of the sun, therefore taking a cool shower helps to lower the body temperature slowly.

Apply after-sun moisturiser to help the skin in its process of repair. Aloe vera is one of nature’s best after-sun soothers.

To prevent sunburn, avoid, whenever possible, going out in the sun between 11a.m. and noon. This is when the sun is directly overhead and the ultra-violet rays have a direct path to the earth. The gentle morning sun from sunrise to 10a.m. is, however, ideal if you wish to attain a mild tan.

Tip: Remove a suntan safely and naturally by using lemon, egg white, and whey – the watery liquid found in sour milk. Cleanse and scrub your skin and apply a mixture of the three to the tanned area. Avoid the eyes. Apply daily until skin attains its normal colour.
