Avocados are in season. In addition to their great taste, they are among the super foods. Take advantage of the plentiful supply and include them in many dishes. They taste great when added to vegetables, rice or githeri.

Try this light starter which can serve as a snack or a brunch dish.

Serves 2

Preparation time: 20 minutes 

Ingredients:

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 large garlic clove, crushed

1 small chilli, chopped (optional)

Juice of one lemon

1 tsp sugar

1 pinch black pepper

1 slice watermelon, deseeded and diced

1/2- avocado, sliced

2 tbsps white cottage cheese

1 small bunch dhania, chopped

1 papadum to garnish

 

Method:

1. Combine the onion, garlic, chilli, lemon juice, sugar and black pepper. Allow to marinate for 10 minutes.

2. Add the watermelon, dhania and cottage cheese and toss gently. Add the avocado slices on top and serve immediately. Garnish with a piece of papadum.

Identify avocado flavour by studying the skin. Here is a guide:

  • Shiny, deep purple skin - contain a lot of water and have a mild taste.

  • Dull, purple skin - Contain a slight amount of oil and have a slightly nutty taste.

  • Grafted, deep green dull skin- Slightly salty and nutty taste with plenty of oil

  • Grafted, purple dull and rough skin - Very creamy and strong nutty taste.
