The skin does not end at the forehead. It continues under your hair as the scalp. And since it is covered in hair, the scalp requires extra care. This area has more oil and sweat glands, therefore proper hygiene is essential.

Due to oil secretion, the scalp needs to be washed at least every three days to retain freshness. If this is not practically possible, the hair and scalp must be washed once a week. Less frequent washing can cause hair to smell.

DOS AND DONT’S

1. Do not leave weaves or braids in for more than three weeks. The sweat buildup leaves a bad odour.

2. If your scalp is dry and flaky, it could be due to dead skin. All it requires is thorough washing and a salt scrub using kitchen salt to dislogde the dead skin.

3. Dandruff is a serious condition and requires medical attention.

4. Scalp itching can be soothed by applying menthol-based products.

5. Always ensure that braids and weaves are not too tight to reduced  scalp inflammation.

6. Ensure that weaves and braids dry completely after washing. Any remaining moisture can create an atmosphere that is conducive to fungal growth on the scalp. Air your scalp daily if you wear braids.

7. Do not share combs and brushes. Ensure that the salon you frequent practices these hygiene measures: Washing of rollers in between clients, use of fresh towels for each client, clean equipment and good quality shampoo.

8.  Avoid using heavy greasy ointments on the scalp as these attract dirt and grime, which coats the scalp.
