What you need to know:

• Avoid skipping meals or avoiding certain food groups. The important thing is the total amount of calories you eat per day and how you expend your energy. Rather eat small frequent meals a day.

• Use a smaller plate. Sometimes we do not think much of it but the bigger the plate the bigger the serving size of your meal. When you use smaller plates, you tend to eat less.

• Stock up on good stuff. Like fruits and lots of vegetables to avoid being tempted by the junk food. Fruits and vegetables give you lots of good nutrients but not a lot of calories.

Do you wonder why weight management is such an issue with most people – whether one is trying to gain weight or to lose some kilos.

People can lose or gain weight as a result of the environment, habits, misinformation, ignorance or even due to underlying medical or health-related issues. Today we look at ways that one can use to start on a weight loss journey.

• You must want to lose weight by yourself. Do not do it for others or to please someone else. Do it because you are determined to keep healthy and leave a longer healthier life.

• One step at a time. Remember that it must have taken you a long time to gain those extra pounds. Losing all that weight cannot be done in a day. Take babysteps rather than trying to overhaul your whole life in a day.

• Do not be radical. Be reasonable in your changes. Do not try out foods or things that you are not familiar with just because you want to lose some weight. When it comes to lasting weight, make small, consistent changes that are practical and sustainable so that you can permanently adopt them into your everyday life.

• Give yourself a treat. Even dessert can be included in a healthy weight loss plan. Feeling deprived may eventually cause you to overeat.
