IRENE KEINO: I relish a game of table tennis

Q: How is your typical day like?

A. I always hit the gym every morning. After that, I go to the office where my job involves interacting with staff, auditing files and chairing policy meetings.

 

What do you love doing at your free time?

I listen to country music and reading.

 

What has brought you the greatest satisfaction in life?

Family support especially from  my father who has been very supportive during trying moments, I love him so much. My two boys, they are my greatest satisfaction.

 

Where did you go to school?

I went to Loreto Matunda Primary School, thereafter to Moi Girls Eldoret. Got my first degree in General Arts and a my Masters in Physical Planning. Currently I am pursing my Masters in Executive Business Management.

 

What did you want to be growing up? Why?

I wanted to be a lawyer but I did not attain the pass mark.

 

Tell us about your family?

I am not married but I have a partner who supports me. My sons are aged 20, and 16.

 

Do you get time to cook for them?

Because of my busy schedule, I do not find time to cook on weekdays but I cook on weekends. I love ugali, beef and traditional vegetables.

 

What are you currently reading?

I love reading, this is where I get my motivation from. I am reading about the Kakira Sugar Company in Uganda, about the history of the family empire. I am also reading Tide of Fortune: A family Tale by Manubhai Mathvani with Gines Foden.

 

What challenges do you encounter at work?

Some of my male colleagues look at me like I am a flower girl who is supposed to be seen and not heard. But I have learnt to rise above this challenge.

Ideal holiday destination?

Arzara in Capetown. The scenery is like when you are passing Kericho and Nandi Hills.

 

Which leader do you admire?

Lee Kuan Yew, the Prime Minister of Singapore. He died age 90 after ridding the country of crippling corruption.

 

What keeps you going?

I fear failing. I was brought up in a very strict family; my father (Kipchoge Keino) was a policeman and we would line up with our report forms every time schools closed. Those who failed were punished. The fear is still in me, I am always focused.

 

What do you spend most money on ?

I am an impulse buyer, I love doing my wardrobe, and I like nice girly things. I turn around my wardrobe once a month.

 

Where do you shop?

I shop in London, during Christmas sales and when on a work trips.

 

Has your upbringing transformed your life?

Growing up in a system of values and integrity gave me a solid foundation.

 

Are you eyeing any position in government?

Yes, the sky is the limit; I would not mind serving the government in a senior position.

 

Do you have a special talent ?

I play table tennis, did it competitively while in school but because of work and other commitments, I only do it for fun. I was hoping that my boys would take after me but none of them has shown any interest.
