Kakamega County will host this year’s Kenya National Music Festival between July 10 and 22.

As is tradition, the festivals started at the zonal level this month, which will be followed by sub-county and county levels and then regional levels before the finals at Masinde Muliro University.

Central Bank of Kenya are the title sponsors of the 91st edition of the music festival and have put in Sh25 million. The bank sponsored last year’s event too.

The festival attracts learners from early childhood development, primary and secondary schools, middle level and vocational colleges and university.

The launch of this year’s event was held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and was attended by Cabinet Secretary for Education Fred Matiang’i and CBK governor Patrick Njoroge last week.

The theme this year is “Enhancing National Unity, Cohesion and Integration through Kenya Music Festival”.

According to Dr Njoroge, CBK’s partnership with the ministry of Education is in recognition of the growing need to provide inspiration and opportunities to the youth and aims to demonstrate the value that the bank places on the nurturing and development of youth talent.

In particular, CBK’s sponsorship of this Festival provides an opportunity for the youth to grow their financial literacy knowledge and enhance their artistic talents through music and poetry.

CBK has composed a special song under the theme “Promoting Price Stability, Sound National Payments System and a Vibrant Financial Sector.” The song was presented during the launch.

Dr Fred Matiang’i said: “As a co-curricular activity in the ministry of Education calendar, the Kenya music festival provides an opportunity for gifted students to develop and showcase their talents on a national platform.”

The CS said the festival is a forum for young people to interact, learn, practice and appreciate their culture and that of other communities to foster national unity, the Kenyan identity and global recognition among other objectives.

Also present during the launch was the Principal Secretary for Basic Education Dr Belio Kipsang, and his counterparts in Vocational and Technical Education Dr Dinah Mwinzi and ministry of Education Director General Leah Rotish and the festival’s executive secretary Ruth Egesa.
