What you need to know:

  • And if you have never read Elnathan John, this is a great introduction to him. His story, Bayan Layi, reads like a colourfully and simply detailed version of Beasts of No Nation. This one is worth a read.

I have developed a taste for anthologies lately because it enables me to consume many bites of various African writers in a short time.

This particular anthology , A Memory This Size and other stories - The Caine Prize for African Writing 2013 Anthology has several worthy stories – such as Miracle, by Tope Folarin, the winning story, which truly encapsulates what it feels like to go to an Africa church in Africa, and even in America; Foreign Aid, by Pede Hollist, and The Whispering Trees, by Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, which makes me now want to read the full volume of his work (his first book), thusly titled. And if you have never read Elnathan John, this is a great introduction to him. His story, Bayan Layi, reads like a colourfully and simply detailed version of Beasts of No Nation. This one is worth a read.
