What you need to know:

  • Bateman’s character finds himself in a delicate situation – his dead partner stole a lot of money.

I have to say that this was directed by Jason Bateman, whom I’ve admired for a long time, but more in a comedy type of way. Ozark is about what happens when you steal a drug lord's money, a drug lord who you don’t think can kill you but ends up killing you.

Bateman’s character finds himself in a delicate situation – his dead partner stole a lot of money, and he is only being kept alive because he promised continued and more profitable money laundering.

Unfortunately, he has no idea how to keep this promise. The solution he comes up with is to pack up his entire family, move to another state and start living on an even tighter budget than they were already accustomed to.

Sure, the plot sounds pretty straightforward, but the macabre way in which they tackle inner demons, family dynamics and a man with a gun trained on another’s head, who’s got no place to run is, quite simply, darkly fascinating.
