Foundation for oily skin

As the name implies, foundation forms the basis of how your skin looks once you apply your make-up. The right foundation or base makes your skin look better by covering up flaws. Looking natural is always the goal, alongside long lasting looks. PHOTO | MARTIN MUKANGU

What you need to know:

  • If your oily skin has acne, look for foundations with oil absorbing ingredients like silicone, salicylic acid and clay. The formulation should indicate that it is oil-free and will impart a matte finish (shine free).
  • The correct application technique will ensure that your skin stays shine-free all day. You need: Cleanser, oil free moisturiser, primer, foundation, concealer and loose powder.

Oily skin, whilst being the skin type that ages best, can be challenging to control. It is the type most likely to develop blemishes and seborrhea (shiny skin). For this reason, many ladies with this skin type opt to wear foundation.

Liquid foundations that offer good coverage are ideal for oily skin types. Avoid cream or stick foundations as these are oil based.

If you have oily skin without blemishes, you may opt to use BB creams or tinted moisturiser. This gives a barely-there look and is a great choice for a ‘no make-up’ look. You can also use compact powder with good coverage.

How to make your foundation last all day

The correct application technique will ensure that your skin stays shine-free all day. You need: Cleanser, oil free moisturiser, primer, foundation, concealer and loose powder.

Begin by cleansing your face thoroughly with a foaming wash. Tone and apply a thin layer of oil-free moisturiser, followed by a thin layer of primer. Allow this to dry.

Using your fingers or a brush, dot a little foundation on your face and blend it in. Blend it with your fingers or a beauty blender at the edges ensuring that you do not have a demarcation line. Apply concealer by dabbing it only where you need it, e.g. on scars.

Use only if the foundation does not cover completely. The final step is to set the foundation using loose powder. Roll it into your skin using a puff, taking care not to disturb the foundation. Brush and blend with a powder brush.

TIP: Use your fingers as much as possible because sponges tend to soak up too much of the product, leading to wastage.

QUICK FIXEES

Stop the shine

Use special oil blotters, which look like little bits of blotting paper, instead of pressed powder during the day. These blotters sop the oil from your face to give a clean look without the caking effect of layers of powder. Available at beauty stockists.
