Delicious food in unusual setting

Here’s a butchery that serves raw and delicious cooked meats and meals. PHOTO| FILE

What you need to know:

  • My colleague and I chose the latter. On a soft thin wheat wrap, he placed shavings of tender grilled meat, along with shredded lettuce, tomato and onions.

  • These were topped with a garlic yoghurt sauce and the optional green chillies in oil.

This ‘high-class’ butchery has been here for several years, offering weekday buffet meals as well as Turkish doner (rotating grill) selections.

When you enter the butchery, the unmistakable scent of fresh meat greets you and you pass the glass display of meat to get to the seating area. Judging by the generous number of tables and chairs both indoors and outdoors, you can tell the place gets packed.

For this area, their prices are extremely fair. A plate of food from the daily lunch ‘buffet’ selection goes for Sh500. The hot food selections include local favourites like chapatti, mukimo, ugali, and a variety of greens.

Your ‘buffet’ is actually limited to one plate, with one or two meat items. If you go for seconds, you pay for an additional plate. Still, the food is fresh and the area is reasonably clean. Employees from the surrounding businesses are regulars here.

You can also order a la carte. For example, you can order a tasty stewed whole tilapia fish, which goes for Sh600, along with basic accompaniments.

We ordered the Doner kebab from the jovial Doner roaster guy outside the butchery. He explained that they have one different type of meat on the Doner grill daily – chicken, beef, or lamb. You can choose to have a Doner burger, or a traditional wrap.

My colleague and I chose the latter. On a soft thin wheat wrap, he placed shavings of tender grilled meat, along with shredded lettuce, tomato and onions. These were topped with a garlic yoghurt sauce and the optional green chillies in oil.

For drinks, you can order a soda or bottle of water. The bubbly kebab grill guy scored an ‘A’ for enthusiasm but overall, the service was slow. Understandably, since it is a butchery, they are understaffed when it comes to waiters to serve lunch. However, the food was excellent so it made up for this discrepancy. Their delicious Turkish doner kebabs cost Sh450.
