What you need to know:

  • Absolute Juice, Third floor, Yaya Centre, Nairobi

Absolute Juice is a popular meeting spot well known for quick, healthy drinks. It fills the needs of a growing niche of health-conscious customers. The décor and ambiance are bright and appealing, with large windows to let in plenty of light.

The place is small with very few staff members. During lunch hour they can sometimes get overwhelmed, so if you visit at that time you will need to have an extra dose of patience or plan your time so you are not in a hurry. Still, their servers are courteous and are usually willing to accommodate any special requests and dietary stipulations without any fuss.

This restaurant is open from 9:30 am to 8pm with only slightly shorter hours on Sunday. They offer deliveries within a certain radius if you want your healthy snack or food fast. Their menu is clear and well-presented.

It is divided into fruit juice, smoothies, veggie juice, beverages, sandwiches and salads. My favourite is usually the Diuretic Flush, a vegetable juice combining beetroot, apple, and celery. Their tropical smoothies are also very tasty, blending fruits with yoghurt, soy milk or even coconut milk.

On this particular day we ordered chicken salad and soup, as well as juices and a smoothie. The smoothie with yoghurt and ice was perfect and filling. They were kind enough to let us taste a tiny serving of the soup first before ordering a full portion. It was delicious, but for our vegan, gluten-intolerant friend, the ingredient list was unacceptable since it contained milk and flour.

So we ordered a smoothie instead. I tried their wheatgrass juice, but I did not have the guts to try it on its own.

Instead, I had it mixed it with beets and apples. Surprisingly, it was quite palatable (or perhaps because of the “superfood” status of wheatgrass I convinced myself that the juice was tasty.)

The chicken salad was well presented. It comes in two sizes – side and main. I ordered the main size portion. It was very fresh and the chicken had been marinated in some nice masala-type dressing. Still, compared to some of the eateries downstairs, the portion size was on the small side. I was doubtful of its value for money.

We ordered some more juice to carry in take-away bottles, and after waiting a while for them to make it, we carried it home. Overall, this is a nice place to eat. They have a variety of thick sandwiches that looked tasty, although I have never tried them.

They always have large muffins on display as well, which they normally serve with tea or hot chocolate. They prices are fair, and are generally an affordable and much-welcome option for a healthy snack. Recommended.
