  • Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your consultation session.

It is common to feel rushed during your consultation with the doctor. Most will give you just five minutes to explain your problem before you are given a quick prescription or referral.

The reason for this is that professionals work by the clock and you are paying them for their time. Time is critical and the more people they are able to see on a given day, the better for business.

This often leaves patients with many unanswered questions. Some doctors even discourage questions because the consultation will then take more than five minutes.

Doctors and other professionals tend to be intimidating, using body language to signify that your time is up. This often leaves you with no choice but to walk out humbly. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your consultation session.

1. Visit in the morning

At this time, the doctor is often bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. He or she will be more enthusiastic earlier in the day as compared to the afternoon when fatigue starts setting in.

Also, chances are the waiting room will be devoid of a queue, thus giving you leeway to ask your questions.

2. Get to the point quickly

Explain your case as quickly as possible. It helps if you have done some research prior to the consultation. Write down or memorise your questions so that you will not ask vague ones. If you are not satisfied, you should say as much.

3. Expect to be examined

Wear clothes that can be slipped on and off quickly to save time. Carry along body emission samples, or be prepared to produce them at a moment’s notice.

4. If you are visiting your dentist, be prepared for a long wait because some services take up to two hours.

5. Avoid going in for an appointment with your child in a bid to get both of you attended to at the same time. You will both receive scant attention, therefore book separate appointments.
