Q: I have had small to medium traditional locks for over six years. Sadly, they have been breaking off at the ends. Does this mean they have stopped growing?

A: The stage at which hair stops growing after a certain length is called terminal length in trichology. This is based on the science that hair has an active growth phase followed by a resting phase.

This is true for hair of people from all ethnicities, except that each follicle grows at its own rate so you will always have new hair sprouting from your head.

African hair grows half an inch a month, on average, and is said to have a terminal length of three years or 18 inches.

However, the advantage of dreadlocks is that even if your hair breaks off after a certain length, it is much less likely to stagnate or appear shorter.

This is because the hair is not being combed, blow-dried or treated with harsh chemical treatments that contribute to breakage. Also, matted hair tends to stay on your head and will only break off if it is too dry due to unhealthy hair practices.

If this is your experience, deep condition your locks bi-monthly, alternating between hot oil, protein and moisture conditioners. Use a daily spritz with water and aloe vera or some other natural moisturising agent and sleep on a  pillow with a silk or satin pillowcase.
