Q: I am a 23-year-old fourth-year university student. I’ve dated my boyfriend for a year and I’m now five months pregnant.

We have been happy together and we had no problems, but last Sunday he told me that he is going back to his ex-girlfriend. He also said that he was sympathetic about my situation.

I am heartbroken and I don’t know what to do and where to go from here. Please advise me.

A: Having dated for a year, during which you got pregnant, your relationship doesn’t seem to have had a good foundation. You didn’t have enough time to get to know each other.

By saying that he is going back to his ex, he is telling you that he is not interested in you or in his unborn child; he only feels sorry for you.

This information is also a message that you should not demand for his attention or support. Knowing this, it is not healthy to cling on to a broken relationship hoping that your ex will come back, as this only adds to your heartache.

With this in mind, accept that your boyfriend (now ex) has moved on with another woman, leaving you with a baby to take care of. Focus on your well-being and that of your unborn baby and make a plan to help you move on with your life.

Take good care of yourself and strive to be healthy. Reach out to close friends and relatives for support and seek professional counselling if you need additional help in dealing with the break-up and charting a way forward. I wish you well.
