When you are invited to a formal event, don’t wait until the very last minute to find something to wear. You can be one of the best dressed people in any room by following a few basic style rules.

•   Plan well in advance. As soon as you get your invite and you know you want to attend, check the dress code. Ask the host to explain it to you if you are not sure what it means, and maybe even give you examples.

•   If you have someone who can help you – a friend who is stylish, for example – ask them for help. A little guidance can’t hurt. Having someone else with you will also make you enjoy getting ready for the event. It won’t feel like a struggle.

•   Give yourself time to find what you really like. Browse and window-shop for options. This way you can find something that works not just for your budget, but your body type and complexion.

•   Compare prices, fit, and how you feel when you put on your choice of outfit. It is a good idea to have two or three alternatives that you can go with. When you have time to decide you will be relaxed enough to make the best choice.

•   Look at your existing clothes and see if there is something you can modify, wear differently or pair with something new. An event does not mean you have to buy a new dress. You can find a new way to wear an old thing.

•   Choose your accessories. Your clutch, shoes and jewellery make a difference to the final look. It is possible that with a little planning, you might spend little or next to nothing to look great.
