How to wear a sweater dress

Sweater dresses can seem totally complicated to wear – and especially if your body type does not favour particular types of knits or cuts. But there are ways to get round these problems. PHOTO | NATION

What you need to know:

  • A large, loose, comfortable sweater can be paired with tights, cropped pants, leather, denim, or if you are adventurous, a little pencil lace skirt or dress.
  • A lean fitting sweater dress can look more interesting with a skinny belt or a striking midi belt to create definition.

Sweater dresses can seem totally complicated to wear – and especially if your body type does not favour particular types of knits or cuts.

But there are ways to get round these problems. Here are some suggestions.

  • Wear a midi sweater dress on its own as a form fitting dress with blended cotton knits. Go for neutral shades of light wool in greys, navy, black or brown.
  • Pick something that works with your style of accessorising. If you like large, junky jewelry, a scoop- or V-neck dress lets you play around. A roll neck is great for pendant necklaces.
  • A large, loose, comfortable sweater can be paired with tights, cropped pants, leather, denim, or if you are adventurous, a little pencil lace skirt or dress.
  • Flat shoes dress down a look while heels dress it up.
  • If you feel under dressed with just a sweater dress you can pair it with something in dark colours and if the day is warmer, you can skip the bottoms and opt for a sweater dress with a longer hem.
  • A lean fitting sweater dress can look more interesting with a skinny belt or a striking midi belt to create definition.
  • Pair your chunky sweater dress with tights and/or with boots, whether flat or in heels. It will balance your proportions.
