What you need to know:

  • Avocado oil is very moisturising because it contains over 70 per cent monounsaturated fatty acids, even higher than coconut oil. You can use it on your scalp, since it readily penetrates your skin and does not leave a greasy film.

Q: I bought a bottle of cold-pressed avocado oil. What is the best way to use it for my hair?

A: Kenya is a producer of this highly-rated natural oil that is used for hair, skin and food preparation.

Avocado oil is very moisturising because it contains over 70 per cent monounsaturated fatty acids, even higher than coconut oil. You can use it on your scalp, since it readily penetrates your skin and does not leave a greasy film.

Avocado oil can also be added to a deep conditioner to enrich it and provide more ‘slip’ so that it lubricates and dissolves tangles.

When applied as a pre-shampoo treatment, avocado oil helps prevent damage during washing of the hair. Before undoing twists or braids done on your own hair, avocado oil applied on the ends helps prevents breakage.

Use avocado oil to massage your hairline daily as a growth stimulant.

Mix avocado oil with your cheap conditioner and apply onto dry hair to aid in the finger detangling process. For best results, let it marinate under a shower cap for 15-30 minutes before you begin detangling.

Finally, smooth on some avocado oil onto dry hair after applying your leave-in conditioner. This will seal it and enhance moisture retention.
